The competition covers more than 2,000 miles, featuring all-women teams ranging from high school students to veteran pilots in their 80’s. The event traces its roots to a similar all-woman race in the 1920’s. Today, the focus is still on getting more women involved in aviation. “There's still less than 10 percent pilots that are women,” said Angel Newhart, chair of TSTC’s pilot trainer department.

“It's great for camaraderie, it teaches women that there's women in aviation too, so it's just a way to bring more ladies into flying.” TSTC has two teams in this year’s competition.

The race started in Arizona and will end in Florida by the end of the week.
