The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association hosted 100 teens for a series of aviation seminars entitled “Get Airborne” that introduced the students to the basics of flight.

North Texas stands to gain more passengers as it becomes a hub for the world’s largest carrier, and it may attract new airlines. American employees are relieved. And Dallas-based Southwest Airlines could also benefit from the ability to expand here and in other cities.
The settlement announced Tuesday by the Justice Department calls for Fort Worth-based American and Arizona-based US Airways Group Inc. to give up 138 landing and takeoff slots, 10 gates and related facilities at airports across the country, including at Dallas Love Field. The DOJ wants to open those airports to low-cost carriers to enhance industrywide competition and provide more choices and lower air fares for consumers.

Officials of the Army Contracting Command in Natick, Mass., are awarding a $2.5 million contract to Prox Dynamics AS of Nesbru, Norway, to develop the Black Hornet Personal Reconnaissance System (PRS) -- a one-pound force-protection micro UAV for soldiers and small infantry units.

At its annual NBAA luncheon this year Women in Corporate Aviation presented 11 scholarship winners with training awards ranging from Cessna CJ3 initial flight training to corporate flight attendant training, to dispatcher license training and to aviation management–and more. The value of the training awards ranged from $1,000 to more than $22,000, and the 11 awards totalled almost $50,000.

Jonathan Trappe, who has flown his custom cluster-balloon systems across the English Channel and the Alps, is now in Caribou, Maine, assembling a huge system that he plans to fly across the Atlantic, launching sometime Thursday. Col. Joe Kittinger, the last balloonist to cross from the U.S. to Europe, in 1984, is on site to provide support, and Don Day, the same meteorologist who advised the Red Bull Stratos launch, also is working with Trappe.
